Foreword

Of the vine regions in the Carpathian Basin the historical vine district along the Hungarian-Serbian border occupies large areas. Here grape and wine productions have common roots. Just to mention the political and cultural influence of Szerémség under the Romans (AD 276–282), the similar environmental, soil-type and climatic conditions, the training systems and local national customs.
The European Community conducted a competition between Hungary and Serbia. In the frame of a cross border IPA cooperation programme we won the HUSRB/ 0901/214/123 competion to work out a project to the
“Evaluation and introduction to the integrated viticulture of the prospective grape varieties of vine regions at the Serbian-Hungarian border”.

Cooperative partners from the part of Hungary:
Corvinus University of Budapest
Institute for Viticulture and Enology
Research Station, Kecskemét
(Lead Beneficiary)

From the part of Serbia:
University of Novi Sad
Faculty of Agriculture
Department of Fruit Science, Viticulture, Horticulture and Landscape Architecture,
Novi Sad
(Project Partner)

New vine varieties and clones bred in the two institutes and adapted to integrated viticulture in the border region are to be evaluation on the other hand, pathogen-free propagation material is to be produced to establish stock vineyards for further propagation.
Pathogen-free stock vineyards are greatly important to supply new vine plantages with healthy varieties and clones improving, in the same time, their life time, biopotential and profitability. Healthy propagation material favours environmental friendly production.
Methods are to be worked out to produce and check pathogen-free material. This work requires a thorough knowledge of pathogens.
One of our tasks included a conference held in Kecskemét 24th May in 2011 in the theme: “Diseases and pathogen-exemption of vine propagation material”. Lectures were given by well-known experts on propagation wood-borne diseases (viruses, viroids, bacterials, fungi, vectors) as well as on proper disinfection methods (clone selection, in vitro cultures, biotechnological methods, etc.).
Experts from Hungary and Vojvodina delivered lectures and took part in discussions. In the lecture room spectacular posters helped inform the audience.
The text of lectures will be published in a supplement of the Journal of Horticultural Science to get public acquainted with pro-
pagation wood-borne diseases, their symptoms, importance and possibilities of protection. We want to be of service to this border region by increasing the level of production and protecting nature. The Journal will contribute to strengthen cooperation and friendship between Hungarian and Serbian experts along the border.
